A commune whose healthy finances and tax base enable it to invest in its residents

A responsible, robust municipality that doesn't waste public money on unreasonable investment projects, that reduces its tax burden on salaries.

CONTEXT

A legislature that's expensive on investments & greedy on taxes

The municipality's main source of revenue is the deductions it makes from salaries and cadastral income. The 2023 accounts show tax revenues of 17 million euros, of which nearly 10 million euros are deducted from Wezembeekers' salaries.

The latest update of our municipality's multi-year plan shows an investment plan for the period 2020-25 of 48 million euros, of which 30.6 million have already been committed between 2020 and 2023. On average, the commune generates annual operating margins of 2 million. It will therefore have spent in 6 years what it took 25 years to build up.

Our position

We believe that the Commune's healthy finances are the result of too much taxation rather than parsimonious management of expenditure, particularly capital expenditure.

With regard to the 10.5 million euros that the current majority plans to spend over the next few months on the construction of a technical hall and the redevelopment of the sports ground, we would like to discuss with the neighboring municipality of Kraainem the possibility of pooling our common technical and sports infrastructure needs.

OBJECTIves 2030

  • Cash flow of close to 6 million euros - equivalent to 4 months' operating costs - and therefore no financial debt

  • Lower labor taxes, with a minimum 0.3% reduction in the PPI rate.

  • More equitable tax distribution between PPI and cadastral income

Our actions

  • Ensure that capital expenditure no longer exceeds operating margins.

  • Use accumulated reserves only for exceptional projects approved by the public.

  • As a first step, reduce the rate of additional charges levied by the Commune from 7.2% to 6.9%.

  • Analyze the relevance of certain recurring operating expenses, including professional fees and consultancy costs.

Your suggestions

During our surveys and discussions, we noted your expectations:

  • Consider lower taxes, for example on property tax, as cadastral revenues are already higher,

  • Consider reducing RC for streets exposed to air pollution.
